Brief: Heritage Refurbishment of Theatre, Rehearsal, and Administration Spaces
The Sydney Theatre Company project is a refurbishment to the existing tenancy of STC in the historic Wharf 4/5 in Walsh Bay, Sydney. The building was originally built in 1919 as a cargo shed and has been home to STC after renovation in 1984. This project is part of the larger Walsh Bay Arts Precinct revitalisation.
The project set out to reconfigure and update the theatre spaces, rehearsal spaces, administration offices, workshops, breakout areas and amenities while maintaining the character of the wharf. The project put an emphasis on flexibility of the theatre spaces, facilitating multiple configurations for future performances, including separating or combining the large and small theatres. The project works with the existing heritage constraints to update and improve the experience for visitors, staff and performers.
